I have half a dozen of the same pen rotating between bags, desks, and all the other places where it's nice to have a pen on hand. I mark all of them with a bit of string or paper and use that to distinguish which goes where.
Strictly speaking, it doesn't matter as long as there's one everywhere. If anything, it's restrictive to assign each pen to only one place. Why force yourself to keep track of all of them when the whole point is to have interchangeable copies of the same item?
It's easier to track the pen in your hand than the lack of a pen in a place you aren't in. A subtle reminder to avoid accidentally picking up one and bringing it somewhere else, and a reminder to bring it back when I notice what happened. Assigning them by making them visually distinct is a simple and easy way to do so.
It's not high effort either, if I bring the wrong pen somewhere there's no penalty. Don't need to remember when I picked up a pen or where I've been today, only associating the pen with the place. Brains are great at that kind of quick association.
It'll make it's way back eventually, as long as I notice. Sometimes that's all the system you need.

Feeling good today, lots of energy for no apparent reason. Not energy to write apparently, but one thing at a time.
