Bag of Bags

You know that collection of random plastic bags that every household seems to have? All stuffed into a bag because they explode everywhere otherwise? Even if you don't get plastic grocery bags, you probably have some from stores or gifts.

Stuffing it into a single bag works for storage, but it's a massive waste of space and not a great experience to take bags out of.

Try folding them instead. That way they'll flatten nicely into a quart or gallon zip bag which can be tucked away neatly, rather than occupying a full bag's footprint. It's easier to pull out a single bag, and if you have bags of different sizes the difference will be obvious when they're folded.

My preferred method of folding is sides into the center in thirds, then smooth out the air and fold in halves until it's small enough to fit. It's important to get the air out after folding in the sides so the stack doesn't get unreasonably thick. This also ensures you don't end up saving bags with holes, because you have to look over the full surface as you flatten and fold it.

Takes longer than shoving things into a bag, but I've found it well worth the space saving.

Nightly Notes

I used to fight the bag of bags, and then I concluded I was going to end up with extras bags no matter what I did.

If you can't beat em, join em.
