In theory, main reason to use a coaster is to block water rings or heat. The secondary reason is aesthetics. Everyone loves a nice coaster set.
The actual reason I use them is to force myself to put down my cup in a specific place.
Cups are an annoying in-between where I always want one wherever I happen to be doing things, but unlike my phone they don't fit in my pocket and can't be set down haphazardly. If I lose my phone under a mattress again, I have to search around for a few minutes. If I lose a cup on the wrong shelf, I'll be cleaning up a spill for half an hour.
If I have to place down the coaster first when I move around, I'm much less likely to leave it on a random shelf. Either I'll move it with the coaster to a more reasonable location like a table, or it goes back to my desk or the kitchen counter, which both don't have water staining concerns.
Simple fixes.

Nightly Notes
I'm linking things solely to remind myself of what I've covered at this point. Feels redundant even to me, I burned my writing capacity for the day on other things. It's fun though, I should spend more time on side projects.
Perhaps I'm only here to stall and keep the opportunity open until I find the reason to write another long post. Whatever it is I was looking for by starting this, I think I've found it. I see no reason to stop.
Hope you're finding new things to do as well.
