Crumbs

The way that pre-packaged single serving food come wrapped for ease of packing and not cleanliness of eating, despite the knowledge that everyone is going to eat it out of the package, confuses me to no end. I'm practiced in eating sandwiches bursting with toppings out of the wrapper without spilling everywhere, but it's a skill I'd rather not need.

If you try hard enough, it's possible to eat just about any crumbly food without dropping crumbs. Same with the filling of any wrap/sandwich, or snacks with a powdered coating. Place one hand under the eating hand, poised to catch. When you take a bite, eat whole pieces or carefully encapsulate the crumbs into your mouth as they break off. It's not complicated.

It's also such a waste of effort. There's a beauty to tidy eating, yes, but at some point one must give in and admit that sandwiches stuffed with shredded veggies were never meant to be eaten neatly. I want to enjoy the taste of my food, not micromanage the bits which fall off or rush to cleanup crumbs on the table, especially if I'm multitasking.

In practice, I end up giving up halfway through and resign myself to cleaning off the table when I'm done. Wastes both effort and time, the worst of all worlds.

Instead, get a little plate to catch the crumbs, even for chips and crackers and all the other foods which don't typically need one. Leave it on the table under where you eat, or hold it up with the other hand to be sure it catches everything. When you're done, the plate goes to be cleaned and the table remains clear, no wipedown needed.

It's an additional dish, but unless something has gone horrifically wrong it's a shake into the trash can and a once-over in the sink for any residue. If you aren't eating anything fresh it's also fine to reuse it a couple times since you aren't eating off of it, only over it. Well worth the effort in exchange for peace of mind.
