You should flatten boxes before recycling because it makes life easier for the recycling workers.
I actually flatten them because then more can fit in the recycling bin and therefore I have to take it out less often.
I empty and rinse bottles before recycling because I don't want to risk smelly goop in the bottom of the bin.
You ever tried cleaning one of the really big trash cans? It's awful.
Never again.
Find yourself some selfish reasons to contribute to the commons. You benefit from the commons too, you just need the motivation to get there.
It doesn't even have to technically be the commons.
Anything which makes life better but there's no incentive to do at any particular time. The commons for your future self, if you will.
Cleaning falls in this category. Most life upkeep does.
I clean the counter after cooking because it's already covered in water from sink backsplash, so "I'd have to wipe it down anyway to dry". When have I ever wiped down the counter to dry off a bit of water?
Never.
But the lie makes me motivated enough to actually do it.

Nightly Notes
I wonder how much of life is upkeep. Maintaining the old instead of building the new. One of my overarching principles is to make more of life upkeep. Normalize things as fast as possible. Roll it forward.
I'm not convinced the novel and new does anything for you until it becomes normal.
It's the process of normalization that changes you.
Anyway.
I think life has finally settled down. Had time to work on some of my upkeep projects. Still finding how to slot all this writing into my life, but it's a question of adjusting the slot, not finding one.
I figured out how to get a daily post out. Quantity achieved.
Where's quality at?
