I get the same thing at every ice cream shop I go to, regardless of brand, price, or scoop size. Ice cream shops are a treat for special days, I don't want to make more decisions besides flavors. Double scoop, two different flavors, waffle cone, no toppings.
Double scoop is for variety you don't get with a pint at home, but still small enough I can finish at stores with large scoops. Eating the cone is half the fun of wandering around with freshly served ice cream, even if it makes an awful mess when the cone isn't fully sealed (as the best waffles tend to be). It's never failed me.
Most of my ordering habits are like this, to the point that more than once I've preemptively answered the server's followup questions only to have them ask me the questions anyway because they didn't realize. It's funny, seeing the script breakdown in real time. I shouldn't poke too much fun, service is hard and they aren't expecting someone to walk up with a memorized order.
Still, even after nailing it down there was a question at ice cream shops specifically which mystified me. Not every store, not even consistently at any particular store, but often enough it clearly wasn't an individual quirk.
"Which flavor on top?"
Why would it matter? I'm going to eat both in quick succession anyway.
I was silly. Obviously the order matters.
Some days you might want the lighter flavor first before ramping into the second, or you might want to start with the rich one and end with a light finish. The top flavor also melts down into the bottom, but not vice-versa. If you want an isolated flavor, or if it melts quicker, it has to be on top. If you want a little more flavor in a plainer option, put it on bottom so the other can melt into it.
Some days I don't care, some days I can't be bothered to decide. But it is a meaningful choice. If I'm going to spend 2-3x on the novelty of walking around with a cone instead of eating a pint at home, I may as well get the better experience.
I wouldn't have realized if they hadn't kept asking me.

Nightly Notes
I like ice cream more on mildly chilly days, when it takes longer to melt. Is that insane?
