If you're going to be late anyway, tell people earlier.
You can't do much about external deadlines like applications or holidays. New Years is coming, with or without you, and you better be ready.
But for social deadlines, like when you told someone you'd have a project done by? Those are usually estimates based on how difficult things should be, and that means they're negotiable.
If you tell someone it's delayed ahead of time, then it's not late. The earlier you can tell them, the better. A week's delay three weeks in advance is good planning, a week's delay a day in advance is a pain.
Get it over with, don't kill yourself trying to hit the date first.

I've been reshuffling all my systems again lately. It's quite a mess, but on the upswing I think.
I'm doing well.
