Remove the Stickers

Do you need every plastic bin you ever buy constantly telling you that it's "Deluxe Storage"?

Do you want to see a barcode on your utensils every time you start cooking, forever?

Visual quiet matters.

Stickers are the only kind of tag which gets harder to remove over time. If you wouldn't choose to add them, why should you keep them? Take them off, and do it now.

A few tips for clean removal:

  • Peel slowly to minimize the risk of the sticker peeling off from the adhesive
  • Pull with the peeled part fully back over the sticker surface. Pulling away puts more stress on the sticker and increases the risk of tear
  • You can sometimes recover from a tear by carefully pulling up the other side of the tear, or peeling from another corner instead
  • For some adhesive (particularly the "filmy" kind which stretches as it pulls off), you can get any adhesive residue off using the sticky part of the sticker. Press firmly to get the adhesive to attach to the sticker adhesive, then remove.
  • There are stickers which are impossible to remove and will only make the surface more annoying if you attempt to remove them. Exposed adhesive attracts gunk. Supposedly there are products for fixing this, but I don't care enough to invest in them. If a sticker isn't cooperating, consider cutting your losses and flattening it back down.

Nightly Notes

I didn't realize how much I had instinctively picked up on sticker removal till a few days ago when I was removing a sticker from a translucent plastic bin and did all sorts of finagling to get a clean peel.

If I had a penny for every near-useless skill I've apparently invested too much time in...
