That One Cable

If I could, I would only have short power cables.

The flexibility of long cables isn't worth the time spent wrangling compared to a single well placed power strip or dock. A couple of meter long cables is plenty to reach a desk-mounted power strip and move things around, or use your phone while plugged into power bank in a backpack. Add on a few stubby adapters and hubs as needed, and you're all set.

Even if you're out and about with uncertain charging, use a fast-charging power bank instead of carrying a longer charger. You get more charge in less time1, have power stored for later which can be distributed between multiple devices, and the option to deposit it for charging without being tethered to whatever outlet happens to be available. Besides, managing long cables in a packed bag is even worse than dealing with power strip chains.

But, there always comes a day when you need the ultra long cable. Power is the base requirement for the modern world.

When you're redoing the desk setup and one thing absolutely must stay plugged in, or when you're traveling and have to guarantee a stable overnight charging setup.

...or just want to lay in the far side of the bed without keeping an eye on a power bank.

Regardless, keep the stupidly long cable, but only the one. You'll need it.

Nightly Notes

This extends to other things as well. I keep a fleet of little washcloths and towels for various purposes but only one super chunky fluffy towel. Still, the number of times I've needed that towel for something has made it impractical to get rid of.

I live with all the things I do because I haven't yet figured out how to get by with less.

Anyway.

I've been surprised how much the nightly notes have been bouncing around from on to off topic. There's a limit to how much I want to talk about the day-to-day online, and thoughts on writing itself take a while to develop.

What's the point in writing that things are the same? Did you know that there's an announcement for when there isn't a leap second? Riveting, I know.

I'll be here all week.

  1. Device charging speeds have been improving, but you'll still be hard pressed to find a full set of electronics you like which also reaches anywhere near power bank speeds.
