Perpetual Rewiring

Top Button

When I started dressing myself, I naturally assumed that just as jacket zippers from the bottom, shirt buttons should start from the top.

Turns out, this is both incorrect and uncomfortable. The top button especially is usually not meant to be buttoned, and originates from specific kinds of formal dress. I don't live a particularly formal life.

For a base shirt, starting from the second button is fine and usually more comfortable. For layers, depending on fit and item, possibly even start from the third.

You also don't have to do all the buttons. When it's slightly too cold to leave a jacket open, fasten only the second one to keep it secure. Keeps the freedom of movement and airflow with slightly more insulation. Immediate quality of life improvement the day when I realized that was an option.

For hanging if you need to button something so it doesn't warp or slip, start from the second and do every other. It's a waste of time to do more.

Nightly Notes

In retrospect, I wish I had someone to explain the basics of practical clothing to me. But hey, lucky ten thousand and all that.
