I cycled in and out of monitor setups for while, but ultimately concluded multiple isn't worth it. Sometimes a second screen is nice to throw things up to monitor in the background, but most of the time notifications are sufficient and the constant visual is a distraction.
There's a few specific workflows which require constantly cross-referencing two windows which both benefit from the extra real estate, but I don't do them often so a laptop plus monitor works well enough.
For everyday work, it's more of a bother to manage the second screen than useful to have it. One of the screens is going to be secondary anyway. Split screen does fine.
So really, there's no reason to have a second monitor for me, or even a fancy one. A flat rectangle with decent resolution is plenty, and those are cheap and easy to manage.

I could write about desk setups, I have many thoughts on them, but I prioritize flexibility to such an extent I doubt it would be useful. When was the last time I even used a static setup?
