It's not always worth doing the dishes right now. But if you have enough dishes the sink is full, don't put them in the sink. Stack them out of the way so you can use the sink for all the things you need a sink for until you get around to the dishes.
Especially if you share a sink, there's nothing more frustrating than being unable to do what you need because of someone else's dishes.
That doesn't mean never put the dishes in the sink, if you have the space it's fine. Just don't add enough to become an impediment. At the minimum, water needs to be able to drain out freely and there should be enough clear space to fit a colander. Even if you don't use an actual colander, it's a good proxy for how much space is needed to wash things.
Looks and smells worse to be sure, but that's more incentive to get the dishes done, and you'll have the sink space to get started.

Nightly Notes
I'm sure there must be some sort of platonic ideal for managing dishes which isn't to wash them all immediately, but I cannot fathom what it could be.
I suppose you could cheat by not owning more than a sink's worth of dishes.
Is that practical?
